Trump’s Israel Peace Plan Isn’t a Plan and Won’t Bring Peace

(Bloomberg Opinion) — The Trump administration’s plan for Israel and the Palestinians is the biggest blow to any hopes for peace since the Oslo agreements were signed in 1993. It may even be fatal.

Standing next to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition leader Benny Gantz, Donald Trump purported to outline a two-state solution. But what he proposed is apartheid: a single state of Israel with limited Palestinian autonomy in some regions. 

The “Palestinian state” outlined in the Trump plan isn’t a state at all, but the box that a state might have arrived in. This entity would be surrounded by areas annexed by Israel; demilitarized; forbidden from entering into agreements or joining multilateral institutions; lack control of its airspace, coastal waters and electromagnetic spectrum; and be subjected to a range of other limitations. Israel could even veto which Palestinian refugees could enter this Palestinian “state.”

The Trump plan acknowledges this deception by claiming that “Sovereignty is an amorphous concept that has evolved over time.” Netanyahu has long called for a “state-minus” for the Palestinians, who are presumably “humans-minus.” The Prime Minister then seized the annexationist moment, pledging that Israel will “apply its laws to the Jordan Valley and all settlements” in the occupied West Bank. An actual two-state solution could never survive that.

Palestinians in areas annexed by Israel would not be granted Israeli citizenship. Yet Israel would retain full extraterritorial jurisdiction over the tiny number Jewish Israelis who would find themselves living in this Palestinian non-state.

The obvious historical analogy is the fictional Bantustans in apartheid-era South Africa, nominally independent African countries that were in fact political and legal fictions for the convenience of white rule.

As they say, you can put lipstick on a pig and call it Sally, but it’s still a pig.

The plan’s deep cynicism is exemplified by the claim that Palestinians would get a capital in Jerusalem, even though Jerusalem would remain undivided and under complete Israeli sovereign control.

The shell game goes like this: a few Palestinian villages on the outskirts of Jerusalem which Palestinians have never considered part of Jerusalem would be renamed “Al Quds” (Jerusalem in Arabic) and made the nominal Palestinian capital. Thanks to this artful rebranding, Palestinians would magically have their capital in “Al Quds” but Israel would retain complete control of an undivided actual Jerusalem.

The plan thus gives Israelis everything they could want, except for those few extremists demanding total annexation of all Palestinian areas rather than just de facto control of them. And it gives Palestinians virtually none of their core goals. No Palestinians were even present for the announcement.

The truth is, it’s not a real proposal at all. It’s pure domestic politics for both leaders.

The timing gives the game away. Trump is facing impeachment, and Netanyahu is facing indictment, and both of them are relying on reelection to avoid serious legal threats. Trump and Netanyahu were doing a victory dance, with Gantz thrown in as window-dressing on the off chance he might win the upcoming Israeli election.

Trump got to pose as a peace-making statesman and pander to his evangelical base. And Netanyahu got to pose as the man who could deliver the occupied territories and annexation at last to Israeli voters.

But although the plan is a fake, the damage will be real and profound — even if nothing, including annexation, ever comes of it.

What Trump is purporting to do is breathtaking. In 1993 the Palestinians, the Israelis and the United States all signed a Declaration of Principles that laid out the basic framework of the peace process, including five final-status issues. All of them have now been abrogated by the United States and the entire agreed-upon negotiating framework is in ruins.

That’s been the main aim all along. The Israeli right never accepted the Oslo agreements, and now the Trumpian right doesn’t either.

When the Israelis failed to get the Palestinians to accept this kind of limited, compromised statehood at the Camp David summit in 2000, this moment probably became inevitable. The asymmetry of power is so stark that it was virtually certain that one day Israel would try to impose by force and fiat what they could not get Palestinians to agree to voluntarily.

Until now, the Israelis have been constrained by the fact that their American patrons were co-signatories to the 1993 agreement. Trump has just effectively freed Israel from all limitations imposed by Oslo and done away with the logic of two genuinely sovereign, independent states in favor of a radically separate and unequal Greater Israel. The main questions now are whether the damage can be repaired, and how much blood will be spilled as a direct result of this political malpractice.

This isn’t a peace proposal. It is an anti-peace proposal.

A suburban filmmaker sued FBI to find out why the FBI was watching her Palestinian Arab Muslim community:

Since 2016, documentary filmmaker Assia Boundaoui has been waiting for answers from the FBI to one question: Which parts of her Arab American community in Bridgeview were surveilled after 9/11? After a court hearing last week, she learned she will have to keep waiting.

Growing up, Boundaoui heard stories from her mother and other community members about FBI agents visiting her neighborhood and knocking on doors. After two family friends were jailed for white-collar crimes, Boundaoui said in her 2018 documentary about Bridgeview, she feared her family would be next.

A journalist by profession, Boundaoui said she needed to know why her community was being tracked so in 2016, she submitted questions through a Freedom of Information Act request to the FBI. Eventually, she received more than 33,000 heavily redacted documents that contained more than 500 names of people and organizations from Muslim communities around the country.

“It’s weird to read how they wrote about us, to see how they saw us,” Boundaoui said. “When we look through the files, we see names we recognize.”

As part of her lawsuit to obtain the requested documents more quickly than the three-year timeline the FBI originally offered, a judge ordered two FBI employees to appear at a Jan. 22 public deposition to answer questions from attorneys. A couple of dozen community supporters also attended, but much of the proceeding focused on the FOIA process.

Boundaoui is taking up an issue that has been hanging over Muslim American communities for years and one that few people even know about: After 9/11, the federal government decided to expand its surveillance of certain neighborhoods. Even today, the reasons for these actions haven’t been fully explained.

University of Chicago professor Aziz Huq, who teaches constitutional law, said it is not surprising that the government uses more controversial tactics in its terrorism investigations.

“It’s not a new idea at all that terrorism is different from ordinary crime because its consequence and human cost is so great that the state has an interest in intervening earlier and in a range of more intrusive ways than it would in ordinary crime,” Huq said.

How such tactics are perceived depends, in part, on who is being asked.

Boundaoui’s 2018 documentary, “The Feeling of Being Watched,” describes a community where strange cars were constantly parked outside houses, cameras were installed near mosques and FBI agents questioned residents inside their homes.

“At the end of the day we think what they’re really trying to hide is that there was a profiling investigation in the ’90s of all Muslims, all of their organizations, under the auspice of this counterterrorism investigation, and it was basically profiling,” said Boundaoui’s attorney, Christina Abraham.

Surveillance of Muslim American communities in the Chicago area started in the 1990s, when the FBI began focusing on charities in the U.S. as possible sources of funding for terrorists overseas. One such investigation was Operation Vulgar Betrayal, “one of the largest anti-terrorism investigations ever conducted in the United States before 9/11,” according to Boundaoui’s lawsuit.

FBI agent Daniel William said Vulgar Betrayal ended in 2000. But after 9/11, FBI field offices were encouraged to go through closed cases to determine whether there were subjects worth investigating again, he said. Three Palestinian men, including Muhammad Salah of Bridgeview, were indicted on material support and racketeering charges.

The documents Boundaoui received describe some of the surveillance and information-gathering: lists of Islamic centers, Muslim student associations and businesses around the country, news clippings about Salah, descriptions of an Islamic Society of North America convention in Chicago in 1997, and records of sharing documents between FBI field offices, among other files.

Siobhan Johnson, spokeswoman for the Chicago FBI office, declined to comment on the case.

Itedal Shalabi, co-founder and executive director of Arab American Family Services, said the community has always felt like it’s being watched.

After Sept. 11, Shalabi said neighbors moved because they felt like targets, while others looked to the community for security. Shalabi said she remembered starting patrols with other women to ask people in unfamiliar parked cars what they were up to — suspecting they were FBI and police.

“The FBI came and knocked on my door after 9/11,” Shalabi said. “My son was 8 years old at that time.

“So I personally made a point to go downtown, to get a FOIA, to see who would report an 8-year-old as a terrorist for Hamas, and to ensure that my children saw their mom using the law of the land as well to bring about some sort of justice,” Shalabi said.

Experiences like that took a toll on young people, Shalabi said, and kids became “hypervigilant” about certain trucks, saying things like, “Look, the FBI is here.”

But they also affected the larger community, sowing doubt.

“That feeling of, man, so-and-so’s being watched,” Shalabi said. “Is he innocent? Is she innocent?”

Standing behind Boundaoui’s request for an accounting feels personal, Shalabi said. “Kudos to her, because a lot of people in the community were not believing that someone could do that, an average person could do that.”

She said she loves this country because “the average person has a right to make a noise and to say this is unfair.”

But reactions were mixed among members of the Mosque Foundation, a neighborhood hub in Bridgeview established by Palestinian immigrants in 1954.

One man said he had watched parts of the documentary but was hesitant to endorse it. He wasn’t eager to make waves. Another woman said she wished she could have attended the Wednesday deposition.

A 15-year-old girl said she and her friends had recently learned about Boundaoui’s project and thought possible surveillance was “shocking.”

Muhammed Salah, who was put on the U.S. “specially designated terrorist” list in the 1990s after being arrested in Israel with large sums of money, was the only Bridgeview resident to be charged with a crime as a result of the community’s surveillance. He was acquitted by a jury in 2007 of racketeering charges but convicted of obstruction of justice and sentenced to 21 months in prison. He died in 2016 in Bridgeview.

In the Chicago suburbs, a backlash against Muslims grew after 9/11. Suburban residents and zoning boards have protested mosque building permits in places like Palos Heights, Orland Park, Glenview and Naperville, the last one inspiring a play on the topic. Often, they would say that the concern was over traffic, but sometimes residents would say they were afraid of terrorism.

Law enforcement officials may feel a responsibility to take preventive measures, like enforcing surveillance tactics, rather than waiting to pursue charges after a crime is committed, said U. of C. law professor Geoffrey Stone. Anti-terrorism methods rely heavily on finding out who is plotting what, said Stone, but also include the difficult question of appropriate limits.

“Those in the position of trying to protect people are understandably much more focused on doing more aggressive things than when you talk to them in a basic criminal context,” Stone said.

Many people can justify targeting certain communities because of the perceived benefit, said Huq, the U. of C. constitutional law professor.

“When you have a democracy where the majority decide, and when you’re picking a policy that may or may not affect the majority but will certainly incur costs on a discreet minority, democracies will always choose to inflict those costs, given the policy is costless for most,” Huq said.

The 33,000 documents Boundaoui obtained, more than 20,000 of which are redacted in full, she said, confirm that the investigation into Salah was a spinoff investigation from Vulgar Betrayal. She wants to know if there were other spinoff investigations, perhaps some that are ongoing today.

But at the deposition, FBI FOIA officer David Hardy said a search of words like “spinoff” in the full text of the documents didn’t fall within the requirements of the FOIA request, which asked for information on investigations that “continued the work of Operation Vulgar Betrayal.”

“We completed the task at hand, which was to gather what we could,” he said.

Hardy also said the agency was hampered by the volume of documents in Boundaoui’s request on top of other requests from around the country.

“When you have 32,000 requests coming in, it’s like processing documents under Niagara Falls,” said Hardy, referring to the FBI’s annual number of FOIA requests.

However, Boundaoui has had some success. In late December, the FBI acknowledged having about 40,000 more documents related to the operation that it hadn’t initially released. At the agency’s normal processing rate of 500 pages per month, according to an affidavit by Hardy, the first release of these pages to Boundaoui would be in March of this year.

“All of the hiding things and the wordplay they’ve used, it seems like they really don’t want us to have these records,” she said. “They really don’t want to show the extent to what happened after 9/11.”

According to a 2004 Tribune report, a month after 9/11, Chicago’s top federal law enforcement officials drove out to the Mosque Foundation for an unusual town hall meeting. Five hundred people crowded into the basement as authorities explained that they were there simply to promote better relations with the community. But when questioned, the officials made a statement that some in the audience found unsettling: They would neither confirm nor deny that they were investigating the mosque. To comment, the officials said, would violate government policy.

Construction workers at a mosque in the German city of Schwelm found a pig’s head at the site on Wednesday, according to Anadolu Agency.

The workers contacted the administration of the Schwelm Yeşil Cami, who relayed the issue to the local police.

The administration condemned the anti-Muslim attack, stressing that the mosque would enrich the city of Schwelm. Stating that they are working together with the local authorities, the adminisrtation underlined that the act was a threat and provocation aimed against Muslims.

Local authorities, neighbors and Muslims living in the city were saddened by the incident at the mosque, the construction of which is overseen by the Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs (DİTİB).

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Using pigs in attacks targeting Muslims or Islamic sites is quite common as pigs are viewed as unclean by Muslims and both breeding them and consuming their meat is haram, or forbidden.

Mosques in Germany, where anti-Muslim sentiment that has accompanied the influx of Muslim refugees has been on the rise, are occasionally subject to attacks ranging from Molotov cocktails to pigs’ heads. German police have been criticized for their failure to identify the suspects responsible for the attacks.

Another possible reason for the recent rise of attacks on Turkish establishments and places of worship is Turkey’s counterterrorism operation in northern Syria. Using her training as a journalist and documentary lmmaker, Boudaoui sought out proof beginning in 2014 by interviewing
community members and ling Freedom of Information requests for records on Operation Vulgar Betrayal, one of the largest pre9/11 counterrorism probes conducted domestically in the United States and included the Bridgeview community. She also submitted
hundreds of privacy waivers on behalf of people who were surveilled to the Department of Justice, requesting les on individuals

The Chicago Reporter spoke to Boundaoui on the status and ndings of her investigation since the lm wrapped last year, her plans
to use articial intelligence, machine learning and community engagement to uncover more about Operation Vulgar Betrayal, and
how her community continues to grapple with the eects of constant surveillance.
This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.
Where are you in obtaining government records on surveillance of your community? What is the status of the FOIA ght?
I never thought the lm would be done and a year and a half later, we’re still in court. I think it’s been about three years now that
we’ve been ghting this in court. And it’s just that the battle is so much bigger than lm. You know, the lm just showed a part of it
but we’re still in court trying to ght for transparency. The Freedom of Information Act, the law itself on paper, purports to force the
government to be transparent and give the public access to information. But in practice, it’s not at all how it works. Even as a
journalist who has privileged access to expedited processing, etc., I needed a law rm to represent me for more than three years. I’m
very lucky to have a pro bono rm representing us because an average person would never be able to aord something like this.
The lm shows how the government documents you’re receiving are heavily redacted. Can you tell us more about how
you’re in early development on a project with the MIT Co-Creation Studio at Open Documentary Lab to use articial
intelligence to ‘ll in the blanks’ so to speak?
What we’re working on is this idea that asking the same institutions and agencies that violated our rights to be transparent about
that is kind of ironic, and it’s not enough. The idea is like how can we compel radical transparency in government without having to
ask the government for it? And so the project is a machine learning project specically and all machine learning requires a lot of data
to be able to do that. So what we’re doing is twofold. On one hand, there are hundreds of thousands of records of other
communities of color that have had very similar surveillance operations and investigations on them. So COINTELPRO isn’t just an
investigation, it was a set of tactics. And these tactics have been used in communities of color over and over again. And so you know,
after 40 years, the national security redactions expired. So we have access to hundreds of thousands of documents, surveillance of
other communities of color, that are mostly unredacted that we’re using as part of our data set.
The other part of the data set is people’s anecdotal experiences. For example, the FBI came to my home and interviewed my mother
twice. They asked her a series of questions, sat for about an hour, and then they left. And the memo that was produced as a result of
that interview is completely redacted for me. But my mother remembers how many people came, she remembers what they asked
her, she remembers who they asked about. And so that’s evidence too.
So what we’re doing is we have a story booth — we call it a co-created project so it’s something that we’re doing with our community
— and asking folks to give their primary evidence, basically, of their interactions with the FBI, of what might be their evidence that’s
been redacted from the record. And we’re using these two data sets, the historical record of investigations of communities of color,
and then the specic anecdotal experiences and primary evidence from individuals who were interviewed and investigated in my
community to help us predict what might be behind the black holes in the reductions.
Although the records you’ve received are incomplete and heavily redacted, is there any new information or insights you’ve
been able to glean from them? Any surprises or details you didn’t know or suspect before?
It conrms without a doubt that this was a mass shing campaign based on religious and ethnic proling. But it’s also like, there
have been some really disturbing details too. So there’s this one document with my father’s name that’s unredacted and details a
moment that we were outside of the house, and it’s like two children come out of the car, those two kids were me and my brother, in
just astonishing detail.
Way before we had electronic, digital surveillance, the mass collection of physical data was really astonishing, and the kind of details
they were collecting, and really the very blatant guilt by association.

I stopped looking for that one yellow canary or that one red ag that would say, ‘Oh, yeah, like, here’s what they did illegally,’ because
obviously, they’re creating these records. But in the whole, in their whole sum, they were very disturbing to see how widespread this
net was that they cast.
Do the documents give you any sense or any clues of what sparked such an intensive probe of Bridgeview specically?
Operation Vulgar Betrayal appears to have been a white collar crime investigation that was counterterrorism?
Yeah, there’s a, there’s a really great book [“The Price of Fear: The Truth Behind the Financial War on Terror,”], Ibrahim Warde is the
author of it. But he writes specically about how, in the ‘90s, the FBI began to use like a maa model on terrorism, which was like
follow the money. They had a very, very awed assumption that these acts of terrorism that were happening abroad required a lot
of money and were being nanced by people in the U.S. And the assumption is awed because terrorist acts actually don’t require
very much money and most of the money that is needed for them is actually gathered very locally.
And that’s why they were looking at charities, that’s why they were looking at philanthropic
giving, and seeing all of these as suspicious. What they saw as a network of organized crime
was, in fact, a network of an immigrant community. You would see things in the documents
like such-and-such borrowed money from this person. And that person gave him a loan. And
it’s like, actually, well, these people were related, you know, and that guy married this girl’s
cousin and they started a store together, you know? Like these are actually the networks of
an immigrant community. That’s what it looks like. And they superimpose this gaze on it and
for them, it looked like a criminal organized crime network.
There’s one scene in the lm where you attend a roundtable discussion between law
enforcement ocials and mosque leaders. You raise questions about FBI surveillance
and civil rights infringement at the meeting and are sort of dismissed not just by the
FBI reps, but also some of the Muslim leadership. Can you speak to the question of how
Muslim communities feel they should or shouldn’t engage law enforcement? Is it a
conversation or debate that you feel has changed or evolved?
I think there’s denitely a shift, Maybe these conversations that were happening privately are
now happening publicly. But this question of respectability politics and the leadership is
letting the FBI in through the front door while they’re still sneaking in through the back door.
And that’s super problematic. The leadership is engaging with the FBI in a manner that the
community disagrees with in general. It’s not the kind of engagement we want.
And I think it’s also really racialized. I think that people think their proximity to whiteness is what’s going to save them, their
proximity to elite status is going to be something that protects them. And we know over and over and over that that’s not the case. I
think there’s a lot to learn from older Muslim communities that have been here for a long time, like the black Muslim community,
and learn lessons like the police aren’t here to protect us, they’re here to protect something else. And the way we engage needs to
be dierent and it needs to be one that really understands the history of how the FBI and law enforcement in general have treated
and otherized people of color to protect white supremacy. And so I think there’s a real shift that’s happening and it’s not just a
generational one.
After that encounter at the mosque with the mosque leadership and the law enforcement representatives, the lm shows
you having a conversation with your mom where she says the biggest eect of the massive surveillance has been basically
to instill fear in a community that has nothing to hide, and it’s a theme you touch on throughout the lm. Do you feel the
surveillance your community has been subjected to has had a chilling eect on freedom of expression, association and
political activity?
When you shut down the largest Muslim charities in the country and in the neighborhood, that has an absolute chilling eect on
philanthropic giving. When you send FBI agents to surveil [Muslim Student Association] meetings, that absolutely has an eect on
how many people join the MSA next year. So certainly it has had some really obvious chilling eects and some quieter ones.
My theory, and this is something that I put at the end of the lm, was that the purpose of these investigations was not to nd crime
but it was to create a chilling eect on the organizing of our community. So yeah, you see that in giving, you see that in how people
associate or don’t associate, you see that in what people even post on Facebook or social media, and what we say out loud on the
phone or don’t say, the kind of self-censorship that we engage in because we’re very much aware that we’re being watched. And
we’re very much aware that whether or not we’ve committed a crime, whether or not we have anything to hide, we’re still going to be

watched, that actually it’s not about innocence. There were some people that would say, ‘oh if I have nothing to hide, I have nothing
to worry about.’ And I say well, that’s all based on a false premise that innocence actually matters. But actually, if you have nothing
to hide, depending on your identity or your last name, you have a hell of a lot to worry about.
What do you feel are the parallels between your community’s experience with surveillance and other targeted surveillance
eorts against communities of color, like COINTELPRO, Puerto Rican independence activists and others?
The way I see it is when a community of color becomes organized on a political issue that threatens white supremacy, or specically
does not take the U.S. government line, that’s when the heavy-handed surveillance falls on them. In my community, it was
Palestinian activism. You know, it was Puerto Rican independence movement and agitating for an independent Puerto Rico, that was
for that community. It was an American Indian Movement that really started talking about wanting repatriation of the land that really
brought the heavy hand down on the American Indian Movement. So that seems to be the pattern.
What has been the reaction to the lm in the Bridgeview community?
It was a triggering thing for people to see the lm. At the screening that we had for 500 people, there were a lot of very emotional
reactions, some people were having panic attacks. It was very psychological and emotional reactions to it. We kind of anticipated it
and we had therapists on hand to help people in that moment. I think one of the biggest reactions and in my opinion, it’s a reaction
that comes out of trauma, is that we just think like, ‘okay, shit’s happening, we just got to keep moving forward, we have to survive,
we have to keep going.’ And we don’t stop long enough to see, you know, how this has aected us — how these decades of
surveillance or being looked at a certain way has traumatized us.
I think the lm was a moment for people to pause and look at the wound. We’re really interested in talking about like if we’ve been
collectively traumatized by these operations, what does collective healing look like and how can we do that in community? And so I
think the lm has validated things that people thought only happened to them, or maybe thought that they were just being too
paranoid about. It validated those feelings particularly for people who were investigated — we had in the audience people whose
fathers were investigated — because it was like, you are not alone, that this was not personal. It was part of a systemic operation. It
was something that the FBI has historically done and is doing all around the country.
You’ve written (https://www.documentary.org/blog/pov-vs-objectivity) about how initially, you set out to make a journalistically
“objective” lm but then you kind of came to embrace your point of view as a member of a community that’s been deeply
impacted by these events. So can you speak a little bit more about how your feelings on what you’ve called the ‘myth of
objectivity’ have evolved?
This idea that being further away from the subject of a story gives you more authority to tell that story than someone standing really
up close next to it is like actually colonial, it’s a very colonial concept. I felt like I had to unlearn a lot of things in order to tell the lm
and to tell the story I needed to tell.
There’s a power in point of view. I don’t believe at all in objectivity, I believe in transparency. Being transparent was really important
when you’re making a lm about a counter-narrative, knowing that there are going to be detractors, knowing that you might be
attacked on this. It was important that we were very transparent in our processes. I think the most honest you can be is not to
pretend to be objective or have a ‘voice of God,’ but to acknowledge your positionality, like where are you standing relative to the
subjects of your story, and to be really transparent about your process. That’s actually always the kind of journalism that I was
attracted to, like the new journalists who talked about how being in a place changed what they were talking about and also were
really, really transparent about their process.
I think there’s also a lot of pressure as a person of color, as a woman, to distance yourself from a thing. We feel like we would be
discredited otherwise. And it took a lot of really looking at it in the face and realizing that this is a really racist idea and I swallowed it.
And in order for me to actually tell this story honestly, I have to unlearn it.
What’s next for you and your investigation now that the lm’s wrapped?
I’m working on this AI project, which is really wonderful to be doing something non- journalistic. Because basically, as a journalist,
this was a dead end for me, right? Like, getting all of these redacted documents was a dead end. And so I’ve had to think like, ‘okay,
well how can I approach this? How can I solve this? How can I deal with this as a non-journalist, like as an artist where I have more
parameters to deal with the truth?’
I see it less as a journalistic project and as more of an artistic project where we try to reclaim the narrative within the actual frame of
the government narrative. And so it’s a project that kind of evolved. It came out of the frustration of going to war for these
documents and winning the battle and feeling like I still lost the war because of the redactions. And so what I started to do was these

guerrilla projections on government buildings, where I would project the actual redacted document and in the black holes, project
images of my family, like home videos of us in the ‘90s at the time that they were surveilling us. So literally juxtaposing what they
said about us in their documents, and in the black holes projecting our narrative of what we were actually up to at the time. And it’s
really mundane stu, you know? It’s like graduations and picnics and all of that. And the idea was like, ‘okay, how do I subvert the
narrative and then deal with the black holes here?’ So the idea was like, ‘oh, can I project meaning into them?’ And then from that the
idea of the AI project was born, and instead of maybe just projecting meaning into the black holes, can we try to predict what might
be behind them?
Last question: were you ever visited or did you hear from FBI agent Robert Wright — who initiated Operation Vulgar
Betrayal — again, since the lm has been released?
Nope, I have not.

Turkey generally feels alone regarding the situation in Jerusalem and Palestine, but will not stop defending the cause, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan vowed Monday.

“The situation in Palestine and Jerusalem is deteriorating and some Arab countries are encouraging Israeli violations. I feel like Turkey is alone on this, but we will continue to stand with the oppressed,” Erdoğan told a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul.

Recalling that the Jerusalem case laid the foundation of the OIC, Erdogan said that the situation in Jerusalem and Palestine is getting worse every day.

He noted that Israel’s attitude, which does not recognize rights, law, justice and humanity, constantly deepens the crisis in the region against Muslims.

“We are aware that one of the reasons behind the terrorist attacks and economic sabotages we have been subjected to in recent years is our principled stance,” he said, adding that Turkey will continue to stand in solidarity with the oppressed and never stop defending the rights of the Palestinians.

Israel occupied east Jerusalem during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. In 1980, in a move never recognized by the international community, Israel annexed the entire city, claiming it as the self-proclaimed Jewish state’s “eternal and undivided” capital.

Erdoğan also underlined that the imperialist approach of divide, disintegrate and rule continues in Islamic countries saying: “Muslims, who make up about one-fourth of the world’s population today, do not have, unfortunately, the political influence or the economic, social or cultural prowess.”

“The better we protect children, women, elderly and disabled against western threats, the more we protect our family structure,” he said.

The Turkish president added that “isolated” Islamic countries are wasting their opportunities and energies.

Erdoğan stressed that it was impossible to get somewhere by simply complaining or talking, arguing for the pressing need to think carefully, analyze and produce solutions to the causes of oppression felt by Muslims today.

“It is our responsibility, as Muslims, to take Islamic civilization to its rightful place,” he said.

He noted that in 2018, Turkey was added to the “very high” development category for the first time, posting 0.806 value points on the human development index (HDI).

Turkey ranked 59th out of 189 countries and territories, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) said in a report released Monday.

The HDI is a summary measure for assessing long-term progress in three basic dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, access to knowledge and a decent standard of living.

Erdoğan later spoke at the Eighth Ministerial Conference of Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process at Dolmabahçe Palace under the theme of “peace, partnership, prosperity.”

In his speech, Erdoğan called on the international community to boost the investments made for Afghanistan in the last 18 years as the country has been going through a sensitive period.

His speech focused on “regional cooperation” to tackle problems the South Asia region has been facing.

“I believe that the Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process is also very useful and effective in providing regional support for peace,” he said.

Erdoğan said while the international community was committed to its pledges to Afghanistan, it was important that the Afghan government fulfills its obligations.

“We welcome the positive steps taken by the Afghan government in the implementation of the Mutual Accountability Framework adopted in Geneva last year,” Erdoğan said.

He added that Turkey would do its best to eradicate the Daesh terrorist group’s presence in Afghanistan.

The Heart of the Asia-Istanbul Process – a regional initiative of Afghanistan and Turkey launched in 2011 – has two chairs, with Afghanistan as the permanent chair, as well as a co-chair from among member states shifting each year.

Israeli settlers’ hate crimes against Palestinians increase in severity this year

The scope of violence by Jewish settlers against Palestinians has increased in severity within the context of the ever-expanding settler population in the occupied territories, compared to previous years.

Israeli daily Haaretz reported on Sunday that 256 acts of violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank were registered, showing fewer incidents in the West Bank compared to last year, in which there were 378 violent incidents, but an increase in severity and scope of violence.

Attacks ranged from beating up Palestinians, spraying racist graffiti on private belongings and vandalizing their property to cutting down trees belonging to Palestinian farmers. The age of the settlers who committed the attacks ranges between 14 and 19, the newspaper reported. Palestinian towns and villages on the West Bank are frequently targeted by extremist Jewish settlers. Lately, more than 160 cars were vandalized in a Palestinian neighborhood of Jerusalem with anti-Arab slogans scrawled nearby, in a suspected hate crime.

The attackers are believed to be members of the terrorist group “Price Tag” which carries out regular attacks against Palestinians and vandalizes their property in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem as well as in Palestinian towns and villages inside Israel. According to Hareetz, 50 violent attacks against Palestinian property were recorded, the same number as in 2018, however, it represents a threefold increase over 2017.

In a rampant wave of vandalism, Jewish settlers continue to destroy Palestinian olive groves in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. More than 7,000 Palestinian-owned trees were vandalized in 2018, according to the U.N.

Rights groups also charge that Palestinian crops have long been vandalized by settlers without any serious effort by the authorities to stop it. Around 400,000 Israelis live in settlements that dot the West Bank and range in size from large towns to tiny hamlets. The international community regards all Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories to be illegal and a major obstacle to Middle East peace. The area, captured by Israel in 1967, is not sovereign Israeli territory, and Palestinians there are not Israeli citizens and do not have the right to vote. Earlier this month, Israel’s new hard-right defense minister ordered officials to start planning a new Jewish settlement in the heart of the occupied West Bank city of Hebron. Right-wing Defense Minister Naftali Bennett said the new development would double the Jewish population in the city, where around 800 settlers live guarded by hundreds of Israeli soldiers, surrounded by some 200,000 Palestinians.

Ryan Grim at The Intercept tells the Democratic party something it doesn’t want to hear. No matter how bad Trump is, no matter how egregious the allegations against the president get, it doesn’t make the fair questions and objections about Hunter Biden and his shady business partners go away.

Indeed, Biden has been taking political hits over of the intersection of his family’s financial dealings and his own political career for some four decades. Yet he has done nothing publicly to inoculate himself from the charge that his career is corruptly enriching his family, and now that is a serious liability. By contrast, one of his opponents in the presidential primary, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., went so far as to refuse to endorse his son Levi Sanders when he ran for Congress, saying that he does not believe in political dynasties. In defending the Biden’s nepotistic relationship, Democrats would be forced to argue that, to be fair, such soft corruption is common among the families of senior-level politicians. But that’s a risky general-election argument in a political moment when voters are no longer willing to accept business-as-usual. For now, Biden’s opponents in the presidential campaign appear to all hope that somebody else will make the argument, while congressional Democrats don’t want to do anything to undermine their impeachment probe. And so Biden skates.

What was going on with Hunter Biden wasn’t all that different from what happened in a lot of families of powerful politicians over the past decades. Back in 2012, the group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington examined the publicly disclosed financial ties of Congress members and their family members. The group found:

‐82 members (40 Democrats and 42 Republicans) paid family members through their congressional offices, campaign committees, and political action committees;

‐44 members (20 Democrats and 24 Republicans) have family members who lobby or are employed in government affairs;

‐90 members (42 Democrats and 48 Republicans) have paid a family business, employer, or associated nonprofit;

‐20 members (13 Democrats and seven Republicans) used their campaign money to contribute to a family member’s political campaign;

‐14 members (six Democrats and eight Republicans) charged interest on personal loans they made to their own campaigns;

‐38 members (24 Democrats and 14 Republicans) earmarked to a family business, employer, or associated nonprofit.

For a long time, this was a bipartisan form of legal and socially acceptable corruption in politics, and some of us have been grumbling about this for many years. Every elected official seemed to have at least one idiot son who needed and apparently deserved a job that offered considerable compensation with minimal real responsibilities. Having a staff job, a campaign job, a lobbying gig, a campaign, or earmark-supported family business didn’t run afoul of any laws, the House and Senate ethics committees rarely ever looked that hard, and too many lawmakers had similar arrangements for their own idiot sons to get too angry about the other guy’s idiot son.

We know why politicians like having lucrative gigs for their idiot sons. But why would any of the rest of us ever lift a finger to defend it? What are we getting out of these little arrangements? Even at PACs, congressional offices, campaigns, lobbying firms, and so on, the number of well-paying gigs is finite. Every cushy slot set aside for Junior is one fewer job available for some young hungry go-getter who doesn’t come from the right bloodline.

Just because something was seen as a necessary evil or a victimless crime for a long time doesn’t mean it will always be perceived that way. As CNN’s Sarah Isgur observed, “politically astute Democrats who defended Bill Clinton 20 years ago have been smart to change their views in the #MeToo era. Are they about to do the same with Biden around the soft corruption of family ties?”

It could well be that the Democrats who are grumbling about Hunter Biden are doing so mostly out of a desire to see another candidate win the party’s nomination, and there’s no doubt that some of the people screaming loudest about Hunter Biden have never objected to, say, the Kushners attempting to cash in on their connection to the president, or a presidential son-in-law with no foreign policy experience handling sensitive negotiations with the Russians. But maybe all of this can be the start of a new era. Maybe we can stop winking and nodding at family members on the payroll, and those never-plausible claims that lobbying firms, consulting firms, and big companies at home and abroad are hiring officeholders’ children “totally based on merit,” as Burisma Holdings chairman Alan Apter said of Hunter Biden.
